Egypt lost 2-1 to Brazil in Cleveland on Saturday in their final warm-up match before the 2026 World Cup. Bruno Guimaraes gave Brazil an early lead from inside the box before Egypt equalised through Mostafa Ziko. Endrick scored Brazil’s winner in the second half after an assist from Raphinha.

Mohamed Salah started on the bench, but came in after half-time. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said the forward was ready for matches.

Hassan said he was disappointed by the defeat but satisfied with the players’ performance against the five-time world champions.

Egypt are set to open their Group G campaign against Belgium on Monday, June 15, at 10:00 PM EEST. They will then face New Zealand and Iran.

Belgium beat Tunisia 5-0 in Brussels in their final warm-up match before facing Egypt in their World Cup opener.

Belgium beat Tunisia 5-0 in Brussels in their final preparation match before opening their World Cup campaign against Egypt.

Leandro Trossard opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Charles De Ketelaere doubled Belgium’s lead early in the second half.

Kevin De Bruyne made it 3-0 in the 64th minute. Dodi Lukebakio added the fourth in the 84th minute before Nicolas Raskin completed the scoring two minutes later.

Tunisia finished the match with 10 players after Ismael Gharbi received a second yellow card in the 61st minute.

The result completed Belgium’s World Cup preparations under Rudi Garcia. The team had also beaten Croatia 2-0 in their previous warm-up match.

Belgium will start Group G against Egypt in Seattle on June 15. They will then face Iran in Los Angeles on June 21 and New Zealand in Vancouver on June 27.

The Pharaohs will play Belgium first before facing New Zealand and Iran.

Mumbai, India: India named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in their T20 squad on Saturday, handing the 15-year-old sensation his maiden international call-up after a string of breathtaking performances in the domestic league.

Selectors also fired Suryakumar Yadav as captain following a poor run of form, just three months after he led the country to World Cup glory at home.

Shreyas Iyer, who last played a T20 for India in December 2023, was named as the new skipper for the upcoming two T20 internationals in Ireland, five matches in England and the Asian Games to be held in September and October in Japan.

Teenager Sooryavanshi seized the limelight with his stellar showings in the Indian Premier League, which ended last week.

Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he topped the batting charts with 776 runs -- including one hundred, and five half-centuries -- and was named the IPL's most valuable player.

The left-handed opener could cap his stunning rise by becoming India's youngest-ever debutant, beating Sachin Tendulkar who played his first Test at 16 years and 205 days in 1989.

The change of captaincy was expected after Suryakumar struggled with the bat at the World Cup and in the IPL.

In the World Cup, he scored just 242 runs in nine innings, with his unbeaten 84 against the United States the only significant knock.

ما الذي تغيّر بين النسخة التسعينية والنسخة الحالية من كأس العالم في الولايات المتحدة؟

حين أعلن الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم عام 1988 أن الولايات المتحدة ستكون مضيفةً لمونديال 1994، لم يصفّق كثيرون. كان الاعتراض صريحاً وبسيطاً: كيف تُمنح أكبر احتفالية كروية في العالم لدولة لا تُدرج كرة القدم حتى في قائمة رياضاتها الخمس الأولى؟ دولةٌ ييشاهد فيها الطفل منذ صغره كرة القدم الأمريكية وكرة السلة والبيسبول والهوكي ولايكاد يسمع بالكرة المستديرة وإن سمع بها من الأساس فيسميها سُوكر بلهجة أمريكية توحي أن الاسم نفسه يحمل شيئاً من الاستهانة أوعدم الاكتراث باللعبة.

ما حدث في صيف 1994 أسكت الجميع

تحطّم الرقم القياسي لعدد الجمهور في جميع اللقاءات، وبلغ 3 ملايين و 587 ألفا و538 متفرجاً، متجاوزاً الرقم القياسي للبطولة الأسبق بأكثر من مليون مشاهد، وبلغ متوسط الحضور في المباراة الواحدة آنذاك 68 ألفاً و 991 متفرجاً.

وحتى اليوم، ما تزال بطولة 1994 الأكثر حضوراً جماهيرياً في تاريخ كأس العالم، ويستمر الإقبال الجماهيري ليشهد نهائي 1994 بين البرازيل وإيطاليا حضور 94 ألفاً و 194 مشجعاً في ملعب روز بول بلوس أنجلوس، وهو رقم لم يُكسر في أي نهائي كأس عالم لعقود بعده وكأن الولايات المتحدة تقول للعالم: لا نحبّ لعبتكم ، لكننا مستعدون للاحتفال.

حين قامت الولايات المتحدة باستضافة كأس العالم في التسعينيات كانت البطولة في دولة واحدة، وتسعة ملاعب، و 32 منتخباً، و 64 مباراة، المشجع يقوم بشراء تذكرة ويحجز فندقاً، وينتهى الأمر، أما في 2026 فالمشجع الذي يريد متابعة البطولة من البداية للنهاية قد يحتاج إلى ثلاث تأشيرات مختلفة، أمريكية وكندية ومكسيكية، وتذاكر طيران بين مدن تفصل بينها آلاف الكيلومترات.

ويرى مراقبون أن التشتت الجغرافي بين الدول الثلاث سيجعل من تجربة المشجعين واللاعبين على حد سواء رحلةً شاقة ومكلفة

وهو ما أقرّ به رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم جياني إنفانتينو في تصريح سابق بقوله :التحديات ستكون في المنظومة اللوجستية بأكملها. نحن أمام قارة ضخمة، ثلاث دول كبيرة ، المسافات، والتوقيت الزمني مختلفان، والتباين المناخي أيضاً فالبطولة تتنقل من الارتفاع الشاهق في المكسيك إلى مستوى سطح البحر في أجزاء أخرى.

مما دعا الفيفا أن تقوم بتوزيع المنتخبات في تجمعات جغرافية متنوعة خلال الدور الأول للحدّ من وطأة التنقل على اللاعبين.

ولعلّ المفارقة الأعمق في هذه البطولة مقارنةً بنسخة التسعينيات ليست في جغرافيا المكان المُعاد تدويره، بل في اختلاف السياق والظروف الجيوسياسية التي تشهدها الولايات المتحدة اليوم

حين استضافت أمريكا كأس العالم لأول مرة عام 1994، كانت بلداً يفتح ذراعيه للعالم، يدعو الجميع ليُثبت أن الحفلة ستكون في أبهى صورها، أما اليوم، فتستضيف أمريكا الكأس ذاته في ظل إدارة تشدّد على الحدود وتُعيد رسم خريطة الترحيب.

وقد تجلّى ذلك بوضوح حين كشف تقرير منظمة العفو الدولية أن مشجعين من خمس دول باتوا مُلزَمين بإيداع ما يصل إلى خمسة عشر ألف دولار ضماناً مالياً للحصول على تأشيرة الدخول، فيما كان الفيفا يضغط في الكواليس لانتزاع إعفاءات استثنائية. تراجعت الإدارة لاحقاً عن الشرط لمن يحملون تذاكر مباريات، لكن الأثر كان قد وقع — وبات السؤال الأصعب ليس عن الكفالة المالية، بل عمّن يجرؤ أصلاً على الحجز.

واشنطن لا تُخفي أنها ترى في هذه البطولة منصة غير مسبوقة للقوة الناعمة، في رسالةً مفادها أن أمريكا لا تزال مركزاً لأهم حدث رياضي عالمي، وذلك بما تملكه من بنية تحتية، وإعلام، ورعاة، وشركات تكنولوجيا، وملاعب قادرة على استيعاب العالم بأسره.

وقد رصد معهد بيكر للسياسات العامة بجامعة رايس كيف تحوّلت هذه البطولة إلى أداةٍ في يد واشنطن لإعادة تعريف حضورها الدولي، في وقت تتشابك فيه ملفات الهجرة والأمن وصورة أمريكا أمام العالم.

غير أن هذه الصورة ذاتها تعكس تعقيداً لم تشهده النسخة التسعينية لكأس العالم، الذي شهد تخوفاً من الفيفا بشأن إسناد الاستضافة للولايات المتحدة بسبب عدم شعبية اللعبة وعدم الاكتراث بها.

لنجد أنفسنا اليوم أمام الاستقبال الأمريكي لملايين الزوار القادمين من كل أصقاع الأرض، في ظل آلة أمنية تعمل في الوقت ذاته بكامل طاقتها وقسوتها.

الفيفا تُحذر

الأمر الذي حدا بمنظمة العفو الدولية، إلى جانب أكثر من مائة وعشرين منظمة حقوقية، بأن تصدر تحذيراً رسمياً يُنبّه المشجعين والصحفيين والزوار إلى احتمال تعرّضهم للاحتجاز التعسفي أو الترحيل أو المراقبة المكثفة خلال فترة البطولة، مشيرةً إلى أن ذلك يجري في ظل سياسات هجرة تمييزية واعتقالات جماعية ومداهمات تنفّذها عناصر مسلحة ومقنّعة تابعة لوكالة الهجرة والجمارك الأمريكية (ICE).

كما طالبت المنظمة الفيفا صراحةً بالتحرك، محذّرةً من أن البطولة تخاطر بأن تتحوّل إلى منصة للقمع إن وُظِّف الحدث الرياضي لتكثيف إجراءات الهجرة والمراقبة والترهيب.

الصفقة الأكبر والأثر المتوقع

ومع ذلك، لا يمكن إغفال الحجم الهائل الذي تُقدّمه هذه النسخة من الناحية الرياضية والمالية، فمن المتوقع أن تتجاوز الفيفا حاجز الـ ثلاثة مليارات دولار من بيع التذاكر وحدها، فيما يتوقع ارتفاع إيرادات البث التلفزيوني 34% لتقترب من أربعة مليارات دولار، إلى جانب الجوائز المالية الإجمالية للمنتخبات البالغة 871 مليون دولار.

لكن هذه الأرقام تعود في معظمها إلى خزائن الفيفا والمنتخبات والأندية. أما المشجع العادي — الذي يُفترض أنه القلب النابض لأي كأس عالم — فيجد نفسه أمام البطولة الأكبر في التاريخ، بأسعار لم يشهد لها التاريخ مثيلاً.

مونديال 1994 كان نقطة انعطاف احتضنت فيها كرة القدم العالمية مفهوم السوكر، وامتزجت فيها ثقافتان لم تكونا يوماً متقاربتين، وأنجبت تلك النسخة الدوريات الاحترافية في الولايات المتحدة، لتؤسس جيلأ كاملأ من عشّاق اللعبة.

ويبقى السؤال الأصعب: هل سيترك مونديال 2026 في الذاكرة الجماعية أثراً أعمق مما تركته نسخة التسعينيات، التي بنت جسراً بين أمريكا والعالم؟ أم أن الضخامة هذه المرة ستكون حجاباً يحجب ما لا يريد أحد رؤيته؟.

Doha, Qatar: Assim Madibo’s journey with Qatar has taken him from youth tournaments to continental glory and the FIFA World Cup. Along the way, the midfielder has accumulated lessons he believes could prove vital for Al Annabi in North America.

As Qatar prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the experienced midfielder believes the time has come for Al Annabi to turn those lessons into results.

“We played all of these matches, and I think now it’s time to put all the experience we gained into practice, taking it one match at a time,” Madibo said as Qatar entered the final phase of preparations for their second consecutive appearance in the football showpiece.

For the 29-year-old, the upcoming tournament represents another chapter in a national team journey that has mirrored the rise of Qatari football itself.

From youth-level success to continental glory and World Cup participation, Madibo has been part of many of the milestones that shaped the current generation.

Having lost all three group matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Al Annabi now target a place in the knockout rounds for the first time.

Drawn in Group B alongside Switzerland, co-hosts Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar face a demanding challenge but one they believe they are better equipped to handle than four years ago.

The campaign begins against Switzerland on June 13 before matches against Canada on June 18 - a fixture scheduled for the early hours of June 19, Qatar time - and Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 24.

Madibo believes Qatar’s growing tournament experience could prove decisive.

“Of course, no match will be easy, not a single minute in any match will be easy,” he said.

“We’ll definitely face pressure during or before the matches, but I think we have enough experience to first adapt to the situation, and secondly, to help the younger players who have just joined the national team get into the tournament atmosphere early.”

With several younger players entering their first World Cup environment, experienced players such as Madibo are expected to provide stability inside the dressing room.

“The more we help the young players, the more they’ll help us strengthen the team and perform well,” he said.

Madibo joined Aspire Academy in 2014 and within months, he was in Europe, signing for Austrian side LASK Linz, where he made his professional debut. Stints in Spain with Cultural Leonesa and in Belgium with Eupen followed before he established himself as a regular figure in Qatar’s national team setup.

Along the way, he represented Qatar at youth level, winning the AFC U-19 Championship in 2014 and playing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup the following year.

The midfielder’s senior international breakthrough came soon after. Since making his debut in 2017, Madibo has earned 49 caps and became part of the generation that delivered Qatar’s greatest football achievement, the country’s maiden AFC Asian Cup triumph in 2019.

There have also been disappointments. He missed Qatar’s successful AFC Asian Cup title defence in 2024 after being left out of the squad.

“It was a difficult journey, full of challenges, with many sacrifices. It started very modestly, and thank Allah I was able to achieve something for my country,” he said.

“I think it was successful, though it could have been better, but thank Allah I’m content with what Allah has written for me.”

Madibo credits mentality for helping him navigate setbacks throughout his career.

“Motivation comes from within. Deep down a player feels responsibility towards his country,” he said.

“I believe the most important thing for successful players is their mentality and self-confidence.”

With fans gearing to provide strong support to Al Annabi, Madibo said it will be huge motivation for players in the challenge.

“I remember my daughter attending a match for the first time, and I was so happy. We always look at the stands and see where our families are, a small gesture alone is enough to make us give our all. I hope we can bring joy to our fans in this tournament, God willing,” he said.
