Teams set sights on Amir Cup glory ahead of quarters
Doha, Qatar: Three days after an eventful final round of the Qatar Stars League (QSL), the country’s top clubs will return to action in the thrilling Amir Cup quarter-finals tomorrow, with the prestigious title at stake.

All the teams who featured in the recently concluded QSL season have reached the quarter-finals, setting up a series of intriguing clashes, with the final scheduled for May 9.
Al Sadd, who claimed their 19th QSL title after defeating Al Shamal in a dramatic final-day decider on Monday, will once again meet David Prat’s side in the quarter-final at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium.
While Al Sadd, under Roberto Mancini, aim for their record-extending 20th Amir Cup crown, Al Shamal will be chasing their maiden title and looking to cap an impressive season on a high note.
In a simultaneous kick-off at 8pm, defending champions Al Gharafa will face Umm Salal at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.
Coach Pedro Martins will demand an improved performance from Al Gharafa in their title defence after they finished the league in fourth place despite a bright start to the season.
Umm Salal, meanwhile, will hope to console their fans with a strong showing in the tournament after being relegated from the top flight.
In Friday’s early quarter-finals, Al Rayyan will take on Al Wakrah at Al Thumama Stadium, while Al Duhail and Al Arabi will clash at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Vicente Moreno’s Al Rayyan will be targeting victory to stay in the hunt for a title that would complete a season treble.
They clinched the QSL Cup and then went on to lift the Gulf Club Champions League trophy, with both triumphs coming inside ten days.
Al Duhail, led by Djamel Belmadi, are also eyeing silverware after finishing fifth in the QSL standings.
QSL play-off on May 8
The Qatar Stars League yesterday announced that the play-off between Al Shahania and Al Kharaitiyat will be held on May 8 at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
The winners will complete the line-up for the new QSL season, which is scheduled to begin on August 20.
Al Shahania were pushed into the play-off after finishing 11th in the league, while Al Kharaitiyat earned their opportunity courtesy of a second-place finish in the Second Division.
Lusail SC, the Second Division champions, will replace relegated Umm Salal.
Amir Cup 2026: Al Wakrah beat Al Rayyan 3-0, advance to semi-finals
Doha: Al Wakrah SC booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 Amir Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Al Rayyan SC in their quarter-final clash on Friday at Al Thumama Stadium.
Goals from Lucas Mendes, Amine Zouhzouh, and Gelson Dala in the 19th, 76th, and 81st minutes respectively secured a comfortable win for Al Wakrah, who now await the winner of the later quarter-final between Al Gharafa SC and Umm Salal SC at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Al Rayyan started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Brazilian midfielder Gregore delivered a cross to Rodrigo Moreno, whose low strike was well saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Bakri in the 5th minute.
Al Wakrah responded with a disciplined approach, absorbing pressure and relying on quick transitions. Their strategy paid off when they earned a free-kick on the edge of the box, which Lucas Mendes brilliantly curled into the top-left corner beyond goalkeeper Mahmoud Abou Nada to open the scoring in the 19th minute.
Al Rayyan pushed forward in search of an equalizer, creating several chances. The closest came in the 28th minute when Brazilian forward Róger Guedes struck a direct free-kick that rebounded off the post. Just before halftime, Al Wakrah's goalkeeper denied Khalid Ali in a one-on-one situation, preserving his side's lead heading into the break.
Despite continued attacking pressure from Al Rayyan early in the second half, Al Wakrah remained the more clinical side. A second goal by Yousef Abderrazak was ruled out following a VAR review for a handball by Aissa Laidouni in the buildup in the 54th minute.
Al Wakrah eventually doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Luis Alberto set up Amine Zouhzouh, who finished calmly. The result was put beyond doubt five minutes later, as Laidouni delivered a precise pass behind the defense for substitute Gelson Dala, who slotted home the third goal.
Coached by Jose Luis Sierra, Al Wakrah saw out the remaining minutes with ease to seal a comprehensive victory and advance to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of Al Gharafa versus Umm Salal.
الشيخ جوعان يعلن ختام الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية.. نسخة سانيا «استثنائية»
أعلن سعادة الشيخ جوعان بن حمد آل ثاني، رئيس المجلس الأولمبي الآسيوي، رئيس اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية، اختتام دورة الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية السادسة «سانيا 2026»، خلال حفل الختام الذي أُقيم في حديقة «ياشا بارك».
ووصف سعادته نسخة سانيا بأنها «استثنائية»، مؤكدًا في كلمته الختامية أن القارة الآسيوية نجحت، بروحها الموحدة، في صناعة لحظة تاريخية، وقال: «معًا، كآسيا واحدة، صنعنا التاريخ. لقد أظهرنا، من خلال حبنا للرياضة وحلمنا المشترك، أفضل ما في آسيا».
وأكد سعادته أن مدينة سانيا كانت على قدر الحدث، ونجحت في ترسيخ حضورها على الساحة العالمية، مشيدًا بالجهود الكبيرة التي بذلتها اللجنة المنظمة، واللجنة الأولمبية الصينية، وحكومة جمهورية الصين الشعبية.
وأضاف سعادته: «لا يساورني أدنى شك في أن هذه ستكون الأولى من بين العديد من الأحداث الرياضية الكبرى التي ستستضيفها سانيا. ومع ختام هذه الدورة، نُدرك أن روح سانيا ستبقى معنا، لتُذكّرنا دائمًا بأن آسيا، عندما تتّحد، يصبح كل شيء ممكنًا».
وشهد الحفل مراسم تسليم علم المجلس الأولمبي الآسيوي، حيث قام عمدة مدينة سانيا بتسليم العلم إلى رئيس اللجنة الأولمبية الصينية، الذي سلّمه بدوره إلى سعادة الشيخ جوعان بن حمد آل ثاني، قبل أن يقدّمه سعادته إلى أبراهام تولينتينو، إيذانًا بانتقال الراية إلى مدينة سيبو التي ستستضيف النسخة المقبلة في مارس 2028.
البعثة القطرية تحتفي بإنجازات الأدعم
تحت رعاية سعادة الشيخ جوعان بن حمد آل ثاني، رئيس اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية، أقام سعادة الدكتور ثاني بن عبدالرحمن الكواري، النائب الثاني لرئيس اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية مأدبة عشاء للوفد القطري المشارك في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية – سانيا 2026، وذلك احتفاءً بالنتائج المميزة التي حققتها منتخبات الأدعم في منافسات الدورة.
حضر المأدبة السيد علي غانم الكواري، رئيس الاتحاد القطري للكرة الطائرة، والسيد محمد سعد المغيصيب، رئيس الاتحاد القطري لكرة السلة، إلى جانب أعضاء الوفد الإداري للبعثة القطري ولاعبي الأدعم المشاركين في الدورة.
وخلال المأدبة، احتفت البعثة القطرية بالميداليات التي حصدتها منتخبات الأدعم للكرة الطائرة الشاطئية وكرة السلة 3×3 و كرة اليد في ختام مشاركتها في منافسات الدورة، في أجواء عكست روح الإنجاز والتقدير لما تحقق من نتائج على مستوى الألعاب الجماعية.
المسند: عمل كبير وراء حصيلة الأدعم
أكد محمد المسند، رئيس الوفد الإداري للبعثة القطرية، أن مشاركة الأدعم في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية – سانيا 2026 جاءت على مستوى التطلعات، سواء من حيث النتائج التي تحققت أو من حيث التنظيم العام للبعثة، مشيراً إلى أن الوفد نجح في تقديم صورة متكاملة تعكس جاهزية الرياضة القطرية في مختلف الجوانب.
وأضاف أن النتائج التي حققتها المنتخبات الوطنية، وفي مقدمتها إحراز الميداليتين الذهبيتين في الكرة الطائرة الشاطئية وكرة السلة 3×3، إلى جانب الميدالية الفضية في كرة اليد، تمثل حصيلة مميزة تعكس العمل الذي تم خلال الفترة الماضية، مؤكداً أن هذه الإنجازات جاءت نتيجة تضافر جهود اللاعبين والأجهزة الفنية والإدارية.
وأوضح أن الجوانب الإدارية للبعثة سارت وفق خطة واضحة منذ الوصول إلى سانيا، حيث تم توفير كافة سبل الدعم للمنتخبات، بما يضمن التركيز الكامل على المنافسات، مشيداً في الوقت ذاته بالتعاون الكبير بين مختلف مكونات الوفد، والذي كان له دور أساسي في تحقيق هذا الاستقرار طوال فترة المشاركة.
ووجّه المسند الشكر إلى اللجنة المنظمة الصينية على حسن الاستقبال والتنظيم، مشيراً إلى أن الدورة أقيمت وفق أعلى المعايير، سواء من حيث الجوانب اللوجستية أو التنظيمية، ما ساهم في توفير بيئة مناسبة للرياضيين لتقديم أفضل مستوياتهم.
حصيلة مميزة للأدعم في سانيا 2026
اختتمت المنتخبات القطرية مشاركتها في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية – سانيا 2026 بحصيلة مميزة في الألعاب الجماعية، بعدما أحرزت ذهبيتين عبر منتخبي كرة السلة 3×3 والطائرة الشاطئية، إلى جانب الميدالية الفضية لمنتخب كرة اليد الشاطئية، في تأكيد واضح على قوة الحضور القطري واستمرارية المنافسة على منصات التتويج. تُوّج منتخبنا الوطني للكرة الطائرة الشاطئية، المكون من شريف يونس وأحمد تيجان، بالميدالية الذهبية. واقتنص منتخبنا الوطني لكرة السلة 3×3 للرجال الميدالية الذهبية. وأنهى منتخبنا الوطني لكرة اليد الشاطئية مشاركته في الدورة بحصوله على الميدالية الفضية.
الصين تفرض هيمنتها على ميداليات سانيا
فرضت الصين سيطرتها على جدول ميداليات دورة الألعاب الآسيوية الشاطئية – سانيا 2026، بعدما أنهت المنافسات في المركز الأول برصيد 55 ميدالية، بواقع 24 ذهبية و18 فضية و13 برونزية، لتؤكد تفوقها الواضح على مستوى الدورة.
وحلّت تايلاند في المركز الثاني برصيد 28 ميدالية (10 ذهبيات و9 فضيات و9 برونزيات)، فيما جاءت إيران في المركز الثالث برصيد 10 ميداليات (9 ذهبيات وفضية واحدة)، تلتها فيتنام في المركز الرابع برصيد 13 ميدالية (3 ذهبيات و5 فضيات و5 برونزيات)، ثم الفلبين في المركز الخامس برصيد 9 ميداليات (3 ذهبيات و4 فضيات وبرونزيتين).
Moroccan Aya El Aouni Crowned Champion of W15 Antalya Tennis Tournament
Moroccan Aya El Aouni was crowned champion of the W15 tennis tournament which wrapped up on May 5 in Antalya, Turkey.
This follows El Aouni’s victory over her Russian counterpart Valeriya Yushchenko by two sets to one.
After losing the first set to Yushchenko (2-6), the Moroccan tennis player managed to regain control over the game, scoring 7-6 and 6-3.
The Moroccan had ousted the Swiss Alina Granwehr in two sets in the semi-final (6-3, 7-6). Yushchenko qualified at the expense of the Czech Alena Kovackova (6-4, 7-6).

Qatar name squad for AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia
Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Football Association has announced its squad for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026, set to take place in Saudi Arabia from May 5 to 22.
Head coach Alvaro Mejia has selected 23 players for the tournament, which features 16 teams competing for the title and qualification spots for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026.
Qatar, champions in 1990, have been drawn in Group B alongside Japan, Indonesia and China.
They open their campaign against Japan on Tuesday, before facing Indonesia on May 9 and China on May 12, with all matches to be played at King Abdullah Sports City.
The top eight teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, to be hosted in Doha from November 19 to December 13.
