The 10 greatest T20 captains of all time

From World Cup winners to franchise trailblazers, these leaders shaped the tactics and culture of men’s T20 cricket.

Captaincy in T20 cricket demands more than setting fields and changing bowlers. The best leaders understand match-ups, manage strong personalities and make decisions before a game can turn.

These 10 captains left the clearest mark on the format.

MS Dhoni

Dhoni remains the standard. He led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 before winning five IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings. His calm decision-making, reading of conditions and trust in experienced players made Chennai the competition’s most consistent side.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit matched Dhoni’s five IPL titles while leading Mumbai Indians through their most successful period. He also captained India to the 2024 T20 World Cup, finishing the tournament unbeaten and strengthening his place among the format’s leading captains.

Darren Sammy

No captain has matched Sammy’s record of two T20 World Cup victories. He brought together a powerful but unsettled West Indies group and led them to the 2012 and 2016 titles. His value lay in creating belief and giving match-winners clearly defined roles.

Eoin Morgan

Morgan changed England’s approach to limited-overs cricket. His sides played with freedom, embraced data and treated attacking cricket as a team principle rather than an individual choice. England reached the 2016 T20 World Cup final and the 2021 semi-finals under his leadership.

Kieron Pollard

Pollard’s tactical instincts were shaped by years of playing in almost every major T20 competition. His finest captaincy achievement came in 2020, when Trinbago Knight Riders completed an unbeaten Caribbean Premier League campaign. Few leaders understood franchise cricket or its players better.

Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir turned Kolkata Knight Riders from underachievers into IPL champions. He led them to titles in 2012 and 2014, backing Sunil Narine, building a strong bowling attack and placing team balance above reputation. Kolkata’s identity during that period reflected their captain.

Aaron Finch

Finch led Australia to their first T20 World Cup title in 2021. His own batting form fluctuated during the tournament, but he remained composed and managed a versatile bowling attack well. Australia adapted to different opponents and peaked when the knockout stage arrived.

Shane Warne

Warne’s Rajasthan Royals entered the first IPL season without the resources or star power of their rivals. He used aggressive fields, trusted emerging players and led them to the 2008 title. His work established the captain-coach model later adopted by several franchises.

Faf du Plessis

Du Plessis built his reputation through consistency rather than one defining trophy. He captained South Africa in 40 T20 internationals and later led several franchise teams, adapting his methods to different squads and competitions. His preparation and calm authority extended his influence well beyond the Proteas.

Hardik Pandya

Pandya had no previous IPL captaincy experience when Gujarat Titans handed him the job in 2022. He responded by leading the new franchise to the title in their first season, producing a decisive all-round performance in the final against Rajasthan Royals. Gujarat returned to the final the following year, confirming that the first campaign was no accident.
