Legendary British Olympian Mary Rand dies at 86

Legendary British athlete Mary Rand, the first British woman to win Olympic gold in track and field, has died at 86 in California.

Rand dominated the 1964 Tokyo Games, winning long jump gold with a world record of 6.76m. She remains the only British female athlete to secure three track and field medals in a single Olympics, adding pentathlon silver and relay bronze to her haul.

Born in 1940, she was voted BBC's Sports Personality of the Year and awarded an MBE. Colleague Ann Packer described her as 'the most gifted athlete I ever saw,' cementing her legacy as one of Britain's greatest sporting icons.
