MLB Introduces ABS Challenge System for Ball‑Strike Calls

MLB has approved the Automated Ball‑Strike (ABS) challenge system, allowing pitchers, catchers and batters to challenge ball‑or‑strike calls within 15 seconds of the pitch.

The ABS system keeps the human umpire on the field but adds a limited challenge option. When a player believes a call is wrong, they tap their helmet and the Hawk‑Eye camera tracks the pitch against the batter’s strike zone. The result is shown on the scoreboard and broadcast within about 15 seconds.

Each team starts with two challenges per nine‑inning game and keeps a challenge if the call is overturned. Only the pitcher, catcher or batter can initiate a challenge immediately after the pitch; managers and dugouts cannot. In extra innings, a team that enters with no challenges left receives one new challenge.
